“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.” -Ephesians 4:15
Have you ever sensed someone not being honest with you? Have you ever asked yourself, “Are they telling me what I want to hear?” Maybe you have. I’m going to level with you. People respect us more for being real and honest than for being fake and withholding the truth. By speaking the truth in love, we are inviting the presence of God in and pushing out the darkness. Fear will keep us silent and hidden. Faith is what moves mountains and shifts the atmosphere.
We all have to learn that not everyone will like what we have to say. Not everyone will trust us. But when we keep being our real, authentic selves, people will learn how to better respect us, even if they disagree, because they see the genuineness inside us. Someone once said, “It’s not what you say, it’s what you keep on saying.”
Jesus spoke the truth and corrected those who hurt him over and over again. Never once did he lie or falsely accuse people. He spoke truth in love and gave without expectation. He didn’t care what people said about him behind his back or to his face. He knew the truth. He didn’t hide or waver from the truth. John 14:6 tells us that, “he is the way, the truth, and the life…” What does this tell us? Truth is Jesus, Jesus is truth. When we are in Jesus, we are walking in truth. Jesus lives in us and we are his. Finally, truth builds charactor and charactor builds identity.
